Rules for Ardsley 2019-20 (Un)Mixed Doubles Curling
General Rules
- We currently have 10 teams signed up for the league and
plan to schedule 3 games (6 teams) each Tuesday at 9:10pm.
- The season will continue through the end of March, 2020.
We will schedule games a month or so
in advance working around teams scheduling conflicts. We may add teams as the season
progresses.
- It's up to the teams playing to pebble and nip the ice. Whoever arrives early, please
take the initiative if you've been trained. Please be courteous to the league playing before us.
- After the sheets are pebbled and nipped,
each player may throw 2-4 practice rocks on their playing sheet prior to game play.
- Games will be eight ends. Games tied after eight ends are declared a tie.
- Please report the win/loss/tie result to us in an email after your game.
(lynn@thesalmons.org)
- Although there is nothing scheduled following the Tuesday 9pm slot, teams
should be mindful of the time and try and complete all eight ends within two hours.
- Scoring is the same as in regular curling. The "positioned" stones placed
at the beginning of each end are eligible to be counted in the scoring.
- While a team is in the process of delivery, the non-delivering players
may be anywhere on the ice surface of the team's sheet. After delivery, either or
both players may sweep their delivered stone and any stones set in motion that belong
to their team anywhere in front of the tee line.
- One player of the non-delivering team may sweep defensively behind the tee line.
- Use of Substitutes: You should have at least one team member present to play a game
and may select a sub from any full-time dues paying member of the curling club including members
of other doubles teams not playing on the same night. We also have a few people signed up on the
Sub List.
Rules specific to doubles play
- Each team shall position one stone and deliver five stones per end
(players may choose any 6 stones of the
same color on the sheet). The player delivering
the team's first stone of the end must also deliver the team's
last stone of that end. The other team member shall deliver the team's
second, third, and fourth stones for that end. The player delivering
the first stone can change from end to end.
- No stone in play, including the "positioned" stones and those in the house,
can be moved to an out-of-play position prior to the delivery of the fourth
stone of an end (the fourth delivered stone is the first stone that can remove any
stone from play).
If there is a violation, the delivered stone shall be removed
from play, and any displaced stone(s) shall be replaced, by the non-offending team,
to their positions prior to the violation taking place.
- A coin flip will determine which team has the decision on
stone position for the first end.
-
Following the first end, the team that did not score shall have the decision
on the placement.
-
If an end is blanked (neither team scores), the team that delivered the first stone
in that end shall have the decision on placement in the next end.
- Prior to the start of every end, the team with the decision shall place its "positioned"
stone in one of two positions, designated A or B.
The opponent's "positioned" stone shall then be placed in whichever position
(A or B) remains vacant. See Figure No. 1.
(If a yellow stone is placed in position A, a red stone
will be placed in position B, or vice versa. )
- Position A: a guard stone bisected by the center line,
at a point between the hog line and the front of the house.
Ardsley ice has coins embedded in the ice.
The stone shall be on the house side of the coin with
the edge of the stone touching the coin. Alternatively, teams may agree at the start of
the game to place the stone on the other side of the coin. The same position A placement
will then be used for the entire game.
- Position B: a stone in the house in the back half of the 4-foot circle,
bisected by the center line. The back edge of the stone is aligned with the back edge
of the 4-foot circle.
- Power Play: Once per game, each team, when it has the decision on the placement
of the "positioned" stones, can use the "Power Play" option to position those two stones.
See Figure No. 2. The in-house stone (B), which belongs to the team with the last
stone in that end, is placed on either side of the house with the back edge touching the
tee line at the point where the 8-foot and 12-foot circles meet. The "Power Play" option
can not be used in extra ends.
- The team whose "positioned" stone is placed in Position A (in front of
the house) shall deliver the first stone in that end, and the team whose
"positioned" stone is placed in Position B (in the house) shall deliver the second stone
in that end.
(i.e., Deciding whose stone goes in the house and whose is a guard also
determines the hammer. By deciding to place your stone in the house,
you take the hammer.)
